Building a home brewery can be a fun and exciting experience, but there are some things to consider before jumping in.
Your first consideration should be location. If you put your brewery outside, you want to make sure you are protected from rain, snow, hurricanes, etc… If you build it inside, then ensure you have plenty of room. When using the gravity feed system you will need a minimum ceiling height on 9 feet to effectively transfer liquids from place to place. Also, if building inside, the room needs to be well ventilated. Garages, sheds and basements make ideal indoor breweries.
If you are using work benches, they need to be of sound structure. You may want to add extra supports to maintain large amounts of liquid. The last thing you want is for your very first brew to end up all over the floor.
You will also want to put your brewery somewhere close to utilities, such as water, gas and electricity, as making beer requires some, if not all, of these.
As sterilization is such an important step in home brewery, it is also important to keep your brewery clean and, for safety purposes, uncluttered. When using heat sources and glass you won’t want to run through an obstacle course to get to your beer.
